Welcome to WWU SRE

Students for Renewable Energy is a non-partisan club that exists to affect our local, national, and global community to move towards sustainability, through the use of renewable energy, by setting an example at Western Washington University.

News and Upcoming Events

Western currently purchases 100% renewable energy by supporting a wind energy plant, thereby offsetting fossil fuel driven plants.   In 2004, students voted to buy Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).  This Spring, students will have to vote once again to continue purchasing RECs.  SRE will be doing a lot of campaigning and raising student awareness to keep this worthwhile fee instated.

Past Events

A selection process was recently completed for who Western will buy their Renewable Energy Credits (REC) from in the future. The Panel discussion will focus primarily on an environmental economic analysis of REC’s and carbon trading by Professor Dan Hagen. Ron Bailey, Western’s Property Manager of Facilities Management, will discuss his role in the planning committee and also his endeavors to improve environmental sustainability on campus. Also, Rose Woofenden, the SRE President, will explain the history of SRE and our motivations behind buying 100% renewable energy. By hosting this presentation, SRE seeks to inform Western Students and the public as to why Western students pay a renewable energy fee. Western’s REC program is setting a new standard in environmental leadership for other universities across the country, and we hope to inspire the community to take similar actions to reduce their carbon emissions.

The presentation has no cost and is open to the public.
